Optimizing the regimes of the Advanced LIGO gravitational wave detector for multiple source types

چکیده
We developed algorithms which allow us to find regimes of the signal-recycled Fabry-Perot–Michelson interferometer [for example, the Advanced Laser Interferometric Gravitational Wave Observatory (LIGO)], optimized concurrently for two (binary inspirals þ bursts) and three (binary inspirals þ bursts þ millisecond pulsars) types of gravitational wave sources. We show that there exists a relatively large area in the interferometer parameters space where the detector sensitivity to the first two kinds of sources differs only by a few percent from the maximal ones for each kind of source. In particular, there exists a specific regime where this difference is 0:5% for both of them. Furthermore, we show that even more multipurpose regimes are also possible that provide significant sensitivity gain for millisecond pulsars with only minor sensitivity degradation for binary inspirals and bursts.

The Advanced LIGO timing system
Gravitational wave detection using a network of detectors relies upon the precise time stamping of gravitational wave signals. The relative arrival times between detectors are crucial, e.g. in recovering the source direction, an essential step in using gravitational waves for multi-messenger astronomy. Due to the large size of gravitational wave detectors, timing at different parts of a given d...

The Laser Interferometer Gravitational wave Observatory (LIGO) and Virgo advanced ground-based gravitationalwave detectors will begin collecting science data in 2015. With first detections expected to follow, it is important to quantify how well generic gravitational-wave transients can be localized on the sky. This is crucial for correctly identifying electromagnetic counterparts as well as un...

The Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO) consists of two identical yet independent, widely separated, long-baseline gravitational-wave detectors. Each Advanced LIGO detector consists of complex optical-mechanical systems isolated from the ground by multiple layers of active seismic isolation, all controlled by hundreds of fast, digital, feedback control systems. This artic...
متن کاملThe cosmological constant and advanced gravitational wave detectors
Interferometric gravitational wave detectors could measure the frequency sweep of a binary inspiral [characterized by its chirp mass] to high accuracy. The observed chirp mass is the intrinsic chirp mass of the binary source multiplied by (1 + z), where z is the redshift of the source. Assuming a nonzero cosmological constant, we compute the expected redshift distribution of observed events for...
